Internet Prescription Regulations

Regrettably, BHAMC can no longer accept or acknowledge requests for prescriptions received by fax from internet sources. We are sorry for any inconveniences this may cause.

Standards set by Virginia’s Board of Veterinary Medicine state that all prescriptions written over a Virginia veterinarian’s signature must appear on a specifically formatted prescription pad. Failure to use correctly formatted prescriptions is a violation of existing regulations, subjecting BHAMC to considerable fines.

Further, many internet pharmacies are not approved by drug manufacturers to distribute products, which means that product quality cannot be assured or guaranteed. Some products are of uncertain origin and manufacturer.

If a BHAMC client with a valid doctor-client-patient relationship requests a written prescription for a drug, versus having BHAMC fill a prescription, BHAMC will offer that written prescription for pick up or direct-to-client mailing. However, client requests for internet prescriptions will be declined. If clients choose to use the internet for purchasing their pets’ medications, they must bear all responsibility for such actions.
